Catalina Madness: My Method For Staying Organized

Yesterday a commenter asked me what to buy to get the best deals for this week's catalina sale at Shaws. Everyone has their own way to stay organized, I'm sure, and today I'm sharing my way with you :) I'll start by warning you....I'm a little OCD about my coupons and I was raised by an accountant!

Catalina Shopping Preparedness: How to Maximize the Deal Without Getting Overwhelmed or Spending All Night At The Store

Step 1: First you need to answer this question....why do you want to do this deal? Are the grocery items included things that you need, or are you trying to make money so you can buy other stuff? If you you're focusing on groceries, that's one strategy; if you want to make money, it's another one. I'll talk about this more in a little bit.

Step 2: Now that you know what you want from the deal, you can start make your game plan. Let's say it's more important for you to have a variety of groceries at the end of the week. Get out the sales flyer and UPC list, and pick the top 10 (ish) items you'd like to buy. My focus items for this week's sale are frozen asparagus, canned soup, toaster strudel, ice cream, Kleenex, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and chicken/beef stock.

Step 3: Determine the rate of return for the sale. This sale is a spend $30, get $15; that means the rate of return is 50% (aka, you get back 50% of what you spend). Why does this matter? Check out the sale prices in the flyer.....lots of items are on sale for 50% off or more. Any items that are on sale for 50% off or more during a sale that has a 50% rate of return, you can get free without using coupons (because the "spend $30" is based on the pre-sale price of the item). During a spend $25, get $10 sale (40% rate of return), you'd have to buy items that are on sale for 60% off or more to get them free.....does that make sense?

Step 4: Look over the list of items you want and see how much % they are on sale for. For me, if something I only *kind of* want or don't need isn't discounted enough, I will take it off the list. Everything gets to stay this week :) If there's something barely discounted but we need it, obviously it doesn't get bumped.....if we need it, we need it!

Step 5: Match up the coupons for the items I want; order some extras from ebay or a clipper service if there's something I desperately want dozens of.

Step 6: Make a shopping list that shows at-a-glance what items I'm getting, how many coupons I have, and what the pre-sale, sale and after coupon prices are. This is my list for this week, with a couple example transactions. Keep in mind, the after coupon price assumes that all coupons $0.99 and under are doubled (I always go to the self check out to make sure this happens).

Final Step: Print out your shopping list, clip it together with your coupons & UPC list and go to the store! Things to keep in mind when shopping: Shaws has a limit of 6 identical coupons per transaction, so make sure you only have 6 of each item at a time. If stock allows, try and pair up the most highly discounted items with the lowest discounted items (you can see examples of thsi in the shopping list above). As I shop I update the # of coupons I have left...just cross it out and write in the new number with a pen.

This method of organizing/shopping lets me do three or four transactions in under about 30 minutes (all back-to-back at the self check out). You know I love a good sale, but I also love not spending the entire night at the freaking store! It's also really easy to adjust transactions if necessary, since you have all the info you need about prices, etc right there in front of you. I save the spreadsheet and replace items/values when a new sale comes around.

*If your goal is to make money, instead of a top 10 list of items, focus on ONLY the items that are the most highly discounted...the top 3 or 4 of the whole sale. You'll only purchase those items, with coupons of course, which will maximize your $$$ cash back at every transaction.
